Ladakh is a beautiful Himalayan destination. Ladakh is a treasure of rich culture and natural resources as well as a heaven for adventure enthusiasts. Ladakh also known as "The Little Tibet", "The land of high passes" or "The last Shangri-La" is situated on the western end of Himalayas, Ladakh has four major mountain ranges - the great Himalayan, Zanskar, Ladakh and the Karakoram, passing through it. A maze of enormously high snow capped peaks and the largest glaciers outside the polar region, dominate the terrain where valley heights range from a mere 8000 ft. to 15000 ft. while passes of upto 20000 ft. and peaks reaching above 25000 ft. can be seen all around. The world's highest battlefield Siechen (6400m) glacier is here.

 

The major waterway of Ladakh is the Indus which enters India from Tibet at Ldemchok. Starting near Mt. Kailash, the Indus according to Mythology, sprouts from the mouth of a loin, and is therefore known as Senge Khababs.

 

The land of Ladakh is prosperous in culture, history, natural beauty and flora and fauna. The Ladakhi region is surrounded by Tibet to the east, the Lahul & Spiti to the south and Jammu & Kashmir to the west. To the north of Ladakh lies the central Asia. Thiksey Monastery :
Thiksey Monastery is a Tibetan Budhist Monastery of Gelugpa Sect, located 19 km east of Leh at an altitude of 3600m. The 12th storey complexe has many items of budhist arts such as Stupas, Statues, Thankas, Wall Paintings and Swords. One of the main attraction is the Future Buddha, which installed to commemorate the visit of 14th Dalai Lama to the monastery in 1970.

 

Hemis Monastery :
Hemis Monastery situated 45 km south from Leh on Leh - Manali highway. Hemis Monastery is a Tibetan Budhist Monastery of the Drukpa Lineage Sect. It is existed before the 11th century and re-established by Ladakhi King Sengge Namhyal in 1672. The anual Hemis festivals honoring Padmasambhava is held here in early June.

 

Stok Palace :
Stok Palace is situated 15 km south of Leh. This palace dating from the 1825 when the invading Dogra forces removed the king of Ladakh. The Stok Palace have a small monastery which was found by Lama Lhawang Lotus in 14th century, and has some ritual mask dance (Guru Tseschu) held on the 9th and 10th day of the 1st Tibetan month.

 

Hall of Fame :
Hall of Fame is 2 km south of Leh on airport road. The Hall of Fame museum has displayes on Ladakhi Culture and the war with Pakistan over the disputed Siachen Glacier.

 

Gurudwara Pathar Sahib :
Gurudwara Pathar Sahib is about 40 km away from Leh on Leh - Kargil Highway. This beautiful Gurudwara is constructed in the memory of Guru Nanak in 1517. Guru Nanak is well respected by Tibetan Budhists who considered him a Saint uner the name of Guru Gompka Maharaj.

 

Sangam (Sindhu Ghat):
Sindhu Ghat is famous all over the India. The River Sindhu flows across the cold desert of Ladakh almost in a straight line through the valley. Sindhu Darshan is celebrated every year on the banks of river Sindhu in the month of June; this festival is a landmark event in the festive calendar of the region.

 

Alchi Monastery :
Alchi Monastery is located 65 km west of Leh on the south bank of the indus river at altitude of 3250m. Alchi Monastery is the oldest and most famou monastery in Ladakh. According to local history, the monastery complexe was built by great translator Guru Rinchen Zangpo between 958 to 1055. Dukhang or Assembly Hall and Main Temple, which is three storied temple called the Suntseg, built in Kashmiri style as seen in many monasteries. The third temple is called the Manjushri Temple. The Chortens are also the important part of the complexe.

 

Dha Hanu :
Dha Hanu(Land of Aryans) is situated to the south west of Leh, around 163 Km passing through the several beautiful and charming villages such as Khaltsey, Dhomkhar, Skyurbuchan, etc. The people in Dha-Hanu are of pure Indo-Aryan stock, perhaps descending from the army of Alexander of Macedonia. However, as far as their culture as well as religious practices is concerned, they come up as quite alike the ancient pre- Buddhist religion, known as Bon-Chos. Being on lower altitude Dha Hanu is warmer than Leh. With their pure Aryan features, these people seemed to have preserved their racial purity down the centuries.

 

Lamayuru Monastery :
Lamayuru Monastery is located 120 km east of Leh at a height of 3510 m. on Leh – Srinagar highway. The monastery consisted originally of buildings, and some remains of the four corner buildings can still be seen. Lamayuru Monastery is one of the largest and oldest monastery in Ladakh, with a population of around 150 permanent monks resident.

 

Nubra Valley :
Nubra Valley is popularly known as Ldumra or valley of flowers. It is situated in the North of city Leh between Karakorum and Himalayan ranges. Nubra lies at average altitude about 10,000 feet above sea lavel. Deskit is the sub ¬ division headquarter of Nubra. The road to Nubra runs across Khardung - La (5578 m. altitute), the heighest motorable road in world.

 

Pangong Lake :
Pangong Lake is situated at an altitude of 4350 m. above the sea level, in the eastern sector of Ladakh. It is 134 km long and approximately 5 km wide at its broadest point, extends from India to Tibet. 60% of total length of lake lies in Tibet, which is today under China’s rule and rest in India. The lake is 5 km wide at its broadest point. Pangong Lake known for his panoramic view and also the climax scene of Bollywood movie “3 Idiots” shoot here.

 

Khardung - La :
Khardung La is the highest motor able pass in world at the altitude of 18380 ft. It is built in 1976 and opened to motor vehicles in 1988. It is maintained by Border Roads Organization. Khardung La is situated 39 km by road from Leh. It is also gateway to the Shyok and Nubra Valley.

 

Tsomoriri Lake :
Tsomoriri Lake is a High Altitude Lake with an altitude of 4595 m. and it is the largest of the high altitude Lakes in the trans Himalayan biogeographically region in India. The Lake is located to the Southeast of Leh in eastern Ladakh at a road distance of 215 km.

 

Tsokar :
Tsokar Lake is approximately 95 km. northwest of the Tsomoriri Lake at a height of (4,590m). It is also called "White Lake" because of the salt deposited around it- this is because there is no outlet from the lake which makes the water brackish. In ancient times, the salt from the lake used to take out and sell it all over Ladakh and Kashmir by the local nomads known as the Changpas. Tsokar Lake is breeding grounds for a variety of birds among them the bar-headed goose, the great crested grebe, the brahmin duck and the brown headed gull.

 

Shey Palace & Monastery :
Shey Palace & Monastery is located 15 km east from Leh. This Palace is built by King Deldan Namgial in the beginning of the 17th century AD. The main image in the monastery is the copper guilded 3 storey statue of Buddha Shakyamuni which was built by king Deldan Namgial in the funeral memory of his father in 1630. The Statue is the only one of its kind in the region.
